Expanding an OS disk that has a recovery partition

Sometimes you need to expand a C: drive on certain VMs. Depending on how the VM was built, it may have a recovery partition that sits right in between the C: volume and the unallocated space to expand the C: drive. Run through these steps to clean up the partition.

  1. Log into the VM
  2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  3. Type in the following commands:
    diskpart
select disk 0 (or whichever disk is shown)
    list part
identify the recovery partition (may be part 3 but verify)
select part [partition number here] (e.g., select part 3)
    delete partition override
    rescan
  4. Go to Disk Management and confirm that you can expand the C: drive now
