Using Azure Image Builder

There are plenty of ways to build an image and deploy it in AVD. This method walks through deploying a Windows VM image as a host pool template.

First, go to Home > Azure Virtual Desktop | Custom image templates

1. Open Custom Image Templates
  * note: you must have a Managed ID for template to work *
  ** Managed ID must have permissions to access install information
   a. Open Managed Identities
   b. Click Azure Role Assignments
    * Add the resource group that holds the image
    * Add resource group | staging resource group | role: contributor
    * Do the same for the resource group that the virtual network lives in
2. Source image can come from Azure marketplace, existing image or compute gallery
3. Distribution: managed image or AVD gallery
4. Select 'Azure Compute Gallery' if using gallery
 * Gallery image definition: (e.g., Win11-Multi-25H2-Gen2)
 * Storage should be premium
 * Select VM size, ensure it supports the generation used
 * If using a marketplace image, disk size must be at least 127GB
5. Still in wizard, in Customizations tab:
 * Click to add Built-In script
  * Select any scripts necessary
    install and enable fslogix
    * profile path, size, version [enable FSLogix with Kerberos]
    disable storage sense for multi-session VM
    teams with AV redirection
    session timeouts
    Windows optimizations
    'Apply Windows Updates'
   Save image
 * Ensure that image build time is less than build timeout
6. Click Create
7. Check the box for the template and click 'Start build'
