Cleaning up VMs after migrating from vSphere to AHV

If you’ve been migrating VMs from vSphere over to Nutanix AHV, there are some steps that should be followed to completely remove the traces of the VMware components in the guest VM. Some of these items can even impact the performance of the guest VM in Nutanix after the migration.

  1. Remove VMware Tools
    A. Try to uninstall VMware Tools from the Programs and Features menu
    B. If VMware Tools fails to uninstall, run through these steps:
    i. Stop the VMware Tools service
    ii. Delete C:\Program Files\VMware
    iii. Delete C:\Program Files\Common Files\VMware
    iv. Delete C:\ProgramData\VMware
    v. In Registry Editor delete the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VMware .Inc”
  2. Reboot the VM
  3. Open Device Manager
  4. Click on View > Show hidden devices
  5. Sort through all devices and remove anything that has a reference to VMware. Specifically, you should see components under ‘System Devices’, ‘Network adapters’, ‘Monitors’, ‘Display adapters’ and possibly other categories.
  6. Reboot the VM one more time
